So, where to from here?

2023 ScratchThat Magazine Team

I’ve finally, after six years of university and thousands of HECS debt dollars, have finished my studies. And the first thing I’m going to do? Clean my room. And then after that, I’m going to do absolutely nothing for a day.

This sense of relief is almost desperate.

I have met so many amazing and interesting people and found my place in the creative world. Being part of a university community was the way I found support and motivation in my writing. Without it, I probably wouldn’t have put myself forward for the Editorial Board at ScratchThat Magazine.

It was a heavy yet rewarding task and, in all honesty, tested my patience, grace, and tact. My first experience with ScratchThat just a year ago was completely different to this semester. There were a lot of changes made, but there is nothing that makes creativity shine like boundaries. I am glad to say, I am so proud of everything my fellow Editorial Board members and I have achieved. We managed to reach some sort of equalisation of the website and print versions of ScratchThat with themes, branding, diversity and quality. Work was delegated in a way that created this success and our assertiveness allowed us to stay on track. So much went on behind the scenes, but the fact you can see what you see on the ScratchThat platforms shows how hard every single person in the team has worked.

I’m leaving my degree with 15 publications and a bucket of skills and experience under my belt. Organisation, leadership, creative problem solving, editing and kindness are all things I have learned. I’ve spent the last couple of years building a resume and this website is a testament to that. I plan to find full time copywriting work at a digital marketing firm, which I have little doubt I will achieve – and these are not the sort of things I often say. Of course, there will be no neglect to my creative practice, where I plan to keep submitting my work to journals and magazines. My next goal is to get a memoir or nonfiction piece published in a non-QUT publication.

This goodbye is a bit sweeter than it is bitter. I leave with more confidence in myself and my writing from when I started as a law school dropout. It’s time to leave the university of the real world and well, enter the real world. And I am very excited.
