In 2021, I had dropped out of my law degree and switched to a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Creative Writing. After my first semester, I came across a QUT Stalkerspace Facebook post from Dana Flannery (TAC Digital) advertising a "boring data entry gig for a marketing or creative industries student." I chucked my hat in the ring, because why not?
I made a LinkedIn profile on my break at my job at the time, presenting it to Dana as if I always had one. She gave me the gig. She had just signed a couple legal clients and found out I was a writer and ex-law student and gave me content writing work too. Ever since then, she has taken me under her wing, giving me the odd job here and there and always teaching me something new.
These skills were able to be transferred while leading the ScratchThat Media Team, Newsletter Team and Research/Website Team. Marketing copy, language and style is surprisingly different to the creative writing we are taught in uni, because it is well, less creative and more formulaic.
In my copywriting work, I mostly write SEO blogs and social media copy, transforming myself into the voice of a client’s brand. I have produced marketing material for various clients from laywers to tradies, property experts to retailers. I work under an NDA for my clients through TAC Digital, but you can see some of my copywriting work through Zanne Art Studio.
